In the alternate reality during Warlords of Draenor, Gul'dan was a major antagonist that attempted to convince Grom to drink the Blood of Mannoroth. However, with Garrosh Hellscream's help, Grom brought down Mannoroth and Gul'dan was taken captive. Later Gul'dan is freed, and with his Shadow Council attempts to take over Draenor.
Later he was betrayed by Cho'gall in Nagrand, and Gul'dan eventually took Grom captive in Talador. He convinced Kilrogg Deadeye to drink the Blood of Mannoroth, along with most of the Iron Horde, leaving it for Gul'dan to control.
After Archimonde's defeat in Hellfire Citadel, the eredar general cast Gul'dan through the Black Gate, where the Burning Legion banished Gul'dan to Azeroth in order to start a Burning Legion invasion. He went to the Broken Isles and opened a demonic portal at the Tomb of Sargeras that allowed countless demons to pour through in Azeroth. He also broke Illidan Stormrage's body free from the Vault of the Wardens with the help of Cordana Felsong. Later, he fought against the Alliance and Horde at the Broken Shore and won, personally killing the High King of the Alliance, Varian Wrynn, with overwhelming fel magic that caused his body to explode.
Gul'dan later traveled to the Nighthold in Suramar, where he worked to summon Sargeras's soul through the Nightwell to possess Illidan's body as his vessel. After the heroes of Azeroth stormed the Nighthold, Gul'dan was defeated and Sargeras's spirit was sent back to the Twisting Nether as Illidan retook his body. Illidan then choked Gul'dan and used fel fire to destroy his body. Only Gul'dan's skull remained, and it was soon crushed by Illidan.
