The Lich King, known by various titles (Lord of the Scourge, Dark Lord of the Dead, The Dark One, "Death God" (among the vrykul), Prince of Darkness, Jailer of the Damned, Lord of Terror) is the master and lord of the undead army, the Scourge, and now rules it sitting on the Frozen Throne.
Created by the Deceiver, Kil'jaeden, the orc Ner'zhul eventually became the first Lich King until his "death," and then Arthas Menethil, once finding and wielding the blade Frostmourne, became the Lich King and took many souls to either leave them to rot and become a zombie of the Scourge, or become a Death Knight like Gazy, however some managed to find the truth of Arthas, like this Death Knight, and formed a rebellion of Death Knights against Arthas alongside the Argent Crusade.
Once Arthas Menethil was slain by Tirion Fordring and the souls he took, Tirion unwillingly crowned Bolvar Fordragon the new Lich King, and he was only known by the fewest of the few as the Lich King, above all in Azeroth, as he was known dead once the attack at Angrathar the Wrathgate happened, a major gate to Icecrown Citadel, the Lich King's home within Icecrown, Northrend.
And even now, the sad story of the Lich King remains a "burden" to the people of Azeroth.
